POAP Final Meeting

POAP project, which aims to produce bioplastics from wheat chaff and citrus peel waste, was finalized in January with the closing meeting held in Valencia. Novel biotechnological production processes developed in POAP Project were evaluated with Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing by Ekodenge. According to LCA and LCC results, production of bioplastics from agricultural residues leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions and water depletion in comparison to petroleum based plastics. In fact, EU-wide substitution of conventional plastics including PET, PS and HDPE with POAP bioplastics at technically feasible levels can potentially help to avoid emission of 6 milyon ton CO2-eq each year.
