OBJECTIVES

  • Development of efficient processes for the obtainment of D-lactic acid (DLA) and itaconic acid (IA) from lowlignin agricultural wastes, such as citrus processing waste and chaff
  • Assessment of novel enzymes for disintegration of cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin
  • Evaluation of process sustainability through a complete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methods

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

  • New biocatalytic routes producing key monomers
  • New enzymes particularly suited for this operation and raw materials
  • New microbial catalysts with improved performance (yield, product purity, tolerance to substrate and product inhibition)
  • New purification procedures for the produced organic acids that would better adapt them to polymer production processes

TECHNOLOGIES

  • Method for the pre-treatment and hydrolysis of orange peel waste and wheat cha, potentially applicable to other microbial-based transformations
  • Bio-based polymers (polyesters, polyamides) derived from the synthesized building blocks
  • Assessment in terms of process economics/ environmental benefits of these value-added chains

IMPACTS

  • Development of new biocatalysts and proficient processes selected through LCA for the transformation of low ligning wastes into valuable building blocks with a further upgrading to polymers and copolymers
  • Valorization of agricultural wastes for production of high-added value bioplastics
  • Contribution to circular economy through waste valorization and resource efficiency
